Getting “Likes” and “Shares”

21 Dec

I have a problem.

I aim to be subtle. I aim to be innovative. I aim to be clever and discreet.

And, although none of these aims is a problem in itself, they’ve become obstacles in communicating with my audience.

I’m building a business, but I don’t want to impose. I don’t want to get in people’s faces. I don’t want to sound like I’m selling anything (which I am).

I want people to, magically, find out about my product, and spread it over the web like a virus.

Yes, I want WAY too much.

I’ve understood that, but I hate spam, so I’ve been making a series of virtual postcards, that I hope people will want to share, consequently promoting Tripppin.

I’ve chosen pictures that I’ve taken on my trips around the world, and decorated them with phrases in English.

This was my first attempt:

Now, I thought this pic was nothing short of genius. Really. I thought: “It’s a pic of a wall, but if you imagine you’re looking from above… WOW! It really looks like a procession of fat men in red robes and black hats walking in pairs, in some futuristic courtyard!! Awesome! Nice pic, instigates debate, intelligent, and not too obvious! Perfect!”

Problem 1: People like obvious. They aren’t gonna spend time trying to “understand your viewpoint” on the web. People share stuff that’s smart, funny, and simple. They share stuff that they laugh at straight away.

Problem 2: The writing is too small. People have to be able to almost read it in its thumbnail size (before they open it).

So, I tried again:

Problem:  Most people who shared, and liked it, were guys. (my girlfriend simply refused)

So, then I went with this one:

And, it’s had plenty of likes and shares. A girl even made it into her FB profile picture 🙂

My girlfriend still thinks it looks too unprofessional (probably because I’m using powerpoint to build it) and has decided to take matters into her own hands. She came up with this:

And it’s been the most popular one so far 🙂

We’ve been putting together a whole album of them, including one for Christmas.

Have a look and tell us what you think.
