Fuck Free

30 Dec

Everyone expects everything to be free on the web.

Free downloads, free music, free videos, free games, free apps, etc…

“So? What’s wrong with that?”

Well, nothing’s wrong with it as a business model: Make it free, attract thousands of people, show them ads.

“Yeah, look at Facebook! It’s got a gazillion users and it’s free!”HA!”

Yes, but it costs $1 billion/year to run FB, so they gotta get their money from selling your personal info to advertisers. So, yes…it’s free, but it’s kinda lame :/

We’ve embraced this concept of “free internet” because it’s what was offered to us, and as a result we’ve created an audience that expects everything to follow that model. Teachers are easily swept into the free mode because, well… teaching is already so naturally rewarding, that most teachers tend to think that education shouldn’t generate profit…or at least not a HUGE profit (which is probably why the profession is so grossly underpaid).

So now, there’s a sea of English teaching/learning resources that teachers have put online for free. Most of them are just blogs with lesson plans, or silly little flash games that do nothing to teach English. They’re worth exactly what they cost: NOTHING.

But, now is the time for change. All educators talk about these days (and they talk A LOT) is the shift/change/disruption/reform in education that is coming with technology. What they don’t see is that the main shift will be the value that the teacher will give him/herself.

As teachers, we’re all self-publishing platforms of content. Do it right, and charge a decent price for it.

Fuck Free.

the only way to make real money from the internet is to produce a book and advertise it through your pages. How to leverage face book use or how to teach on-line.
    make the book

merry Christmas and happy new year.
    (sorry its a bit late)
